Myrick Statement on the new $3 Trillion Federal Budget
Raises Tax by $400 Billion Over the Next 5 Years

In case you missed it on the news, the new majority in the House of Representatives just passed their budget—which includes the largest tax increase in American history.  It provides no reforms and no real accountability.  Its total price tag is close to $3 trillion.

Here's what would happen under this new budget.  Over 5 million poor Americans who previously owed no taxes would become subject to taxation.  In the next five years, 115 million taxpayers would see their taxes increase, on average, by $1,795.  42 million families with children would see a tax increase of around $2,181.  17 million senior citizens would see a tax increase of $2,270.  Taxes would rise, on average, by $3,960 for 26 million small business owners, and the capital gains tax cut which helps millions of seniors, who earn money off dividends, would be eliminated.

Furthermore, the death tax would be resurrected in 2011.  The child tax credits would be slashed, raising taxes on 31 million families.  The marriage penalty would return, punishing 23 million married couples, and the Alternative Minimum Tax would hurt tens of millions of middle class American workers.

I voted against this budget, and I oppose raising taxes.  If you like keeping your hard earned money, I hope you agree.  It's your money—not the government's!

Myrick's Breast Cancer Bill Passes House/
Press Conference with Sheryl Crow

On March 27, 2007, Rep. Myrick's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) Reauthorization Act of 2007 (H.R. 1132) was passed in the US House.  The bill reauthorizes this successful program so that it can continue to provide breast and cervical cancer screenings to low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women, as well as give states greater flexibility to reach more women who are eligible and in need.

“As a breast cancer survivor, I know the importance of regular screenings.  American women shouldn’t die from cancer because they struggle to afford screenings.  I’m proud of this program, and prouder still that women who are screened and learn that they have cancer can get the treatment they need to get healthy,” said Congresswoman Myrick.

Established in 1991 and administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the NBCCEDP operates in all 50 states, 4 U.S. Territories, the District of Columbia, and 13 Native American organizations.  The program provides states with funding in the form of grants.

To date, the program has provided nearly 6.5 million screening tests to 2.7 million women, detecting more than 26,000 breast cancers, 1,700 cervical cancers and 88,000 pre-cancerous cervical lesions.  The number of breast cancer deaths has declined in recent years, thanks, in part to earlier detection.

The Senate passed the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program Reauthorization Act on March 29, 2007.  The bill was signed into law by President Bush on April 20, 2007. You can view the video of the bill signing by clicking here.

Myrick also participated in a Breast Cancer Press Conference with singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow.  The Press conference was held on March 28th, where Sheryl Crow and other Members of Congress and US Senators were pushing for the passage of  Rep. Myrick’s Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act.  Rep. Myrick has been working to get this bill passed for the past 6 years.

The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act would authorize the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to provide grants that would establish and operate research centers to further study environmental factors potentially linked to the development of breast cancer.  There have been isolated studies on potential environmental links to breast cancer, but more long-term, comprehensive studies are needed. This bill would help initiate more in-depth research to explain the impact of the environment on breast cancer.

Social Security Fraudulent Use Act

On March 24, 2007, Rep. Myrick re-introduced her Security Number Fraudulent Use Notification Act.  This bill requires the Social Security Administration to promptly notify the American citizen originally issued a Social Security number if it is determined that another individual is using the number in a fraudulent or otherwise illegal manner.  Right now, the Social Security Administration knows when a card is being used more than once, but they do not inform the person their identity could be stolen.  This is wrong, and Rep. Myrick’s bill would make sure Americans are aware if they are in danger of identity theft.

Rep. Myrick first introduced this bill in April of 2006.  The bill had to be re-introduced because elections took place in November and there is now a new Congress (at the end of every Congress, all legislative bills not passed into law are cleared from the record and must be reintroduced).

Rep. Myrick also called on the NC Governor and the US Social Security Administrator to contact the 27,000 North Carolinians at risk of ID theft (click here to read her letter).  This was in response to the NC Auditor's report that found that North Carolina had issued roughly 27,000 driver's licenses to motorists based on invalid Social Security numbers (click here to read more).

Myrick Brings Immigration Court to Charlotte, NC

On March 16, 2007, Rep. Myrick announced that the Department of Justice (DOJ) informed her that they will be opening an immigration court in Charlotte, North Carolina.  DOJ told Myrick’s office they are in the process of working with the General Services Administration (GSA) to find a location to house the immigration court.

Rep. Myrick has been fighting to bring an immigration court to Charlotte for nearly eight years.  She has met with Department of Justice officials, written countless letters urging the DOJ to establish a court, and started a statewide petition drive to bring an immigration court to North Carolina.

“This is great news for our state!  We have been fighting to bring an immigration court to our area for some time, and now it’s going to be a reality,” said Rep. Myrick.  “An immigration court will speed up illegal alien deportations.  It will also help legal immigrants playing by the rules because they will no longer have to travel to Atlanta to deal with immigration matters.”

Myrick also added, “This could not have been done without the support and hard work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Jeff Jordan and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Jim Pendergraph”.

Myrick Ranked As Most Conservative NC Member

National Journal, a political publication in WashingtonDC, recently released their 2006 Congressional vote ratings, which show where Members of Congress stand ideologically.  Rep. Myrick received a conservative rating of 89.2%.  This percentage ranked Myrick as the most conservative Member of the North Carolina delegation.

This honor was reported in the News and Observer "Under the Dome" on March 23rd.  It is the second story in the section, which you can read here: http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/556464.html
